Vertical
dials may be installed on any wall or pillar. This one is painted wood with the inscription LUX SPEI LUX VITAE ( 'The light of hope is the light of life' ).
A more complex dial may be constructed as separate panels, as in the dial David has created for an installation high on a wall at Darwin College, University of Kent at Canterbury. A green wyvern from Darwin's coat of arms supports the gnomon.
Alternatively, stone or slate may be used, or a dial may be cut straight onto a suitable wall such as this vertical dial with gilded sunburst and hourlines carved straight on to a classical pediment at Bath.
